KORDI Oceanographic Digital Library named
Best Specialized Library

Given Prime Minister's Award
at the
2011 National Library Evaluation

Republic of Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute's (Director Kang, Jung Geuk) Oceanographic Digital Library was named the best library at the '2011 National Library Evaluation' by the Presidential Library Information Policy Committee under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and was presented with the Prime Minister's Award.

The Library was selected as the Best Specialized Library.' Awards were also given to libraries in the categories of ‘Best Public Library,’ ‘Best School Library,’ ‘Best Military Library,’ and ‘Best Prison Library.’ The Oceanographic Digital Library was presented with the Prime Minister's Award at the 48th National Library Competition, which was held at Daejeon Convention Center on October 19. The Oceanographic Digital Library won the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Award last year.

The Library provides intensive specialized services by securing the greatest knowledge information resources and contents in the marine industry, enabling it to satisfy the need of researchers for specialized information.

It received high scores in 'library innovation' by operating the 'sharing library reading campaign' for knowledge sharing, 'marine science class' for youth, and 'English electronic library Homepage' to provide globalized marine science information services.

"Our award-winning performance for two consecutive years is the result of our seamless efforts to provide marine scientists and the general public with high-quality marine science information services," said Director Han, Jong Yeop of Oceanographic Digital Library. "We will continue to contribute to improving the quality of marine science information services by building a future-oriented electronic library with the latest information technologies, providing advanced specialized services, and bringing marine science closer to the people."

The ‘National Library Evaluation’ has been implemented since 2007 to improve library infrastructures and services in Republic of Korea, and 2,634 libraries in five library categories (public, school, specialized, military, and prison) have participated in this year's evaluation.

This year's evaluation, in particular, selected award-winning libraries through three steps of deliberation (document review-due diligence review-final deliberation) by the 2010 Library Evaluation Committee composed of experts from related academic sectors and government offices, which considered each library's operating performance since 2010.
