The Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST, President Kim Woong-seo) announced that three laboratories of KOIST’s Jeju Research Institute were selected to receive the “2019 Excellent Safety Management Laboratory” certification by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

Implemented by the Ministry of Science and ICT in 2013, the Excellent Safety Management Laboratory certification, a system through which experts and a certification review committee carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the safety management status and activities and safety awareness of laboratories and grant certification, aims to establish an autonomous safety management system for research laboratories.

KIOST’s Jeju Research Institute has become the first on Jeju Island to receive the Excellent Safety Management Laboratory certification. In particular, three laboratories of the institute were certified at the same time, indicating that the safety management status and activities of the laboratories are excellent in general.

These three laboratories?the Animal Cell Culture Lab, Useful Enzyme Development Lab, and Natural Marine Product Analysis Lab ?are conducting research for the marine biology industry using the marine organisms of Jeju Island.
The Animal Cell Culture Lab  is a laboratory that analyzes the molecular biological characteristics of cells through the development of a medium that cultures animal cells and pure culture. In addition, the Useful Enzyme Development Lab  conducts research that aims to discover and efficiently produce industrially applicable enzymes from marine organisms. The Natural Marine Product Analysis Lab  identifies the structure and analyzes the efficacy of marine products by separating and purifying their functional components.

President Kim Woong-seo said, “KIOST will continue doing its best to manage research safety to ensure that researchers can conduct their studies in a safe environment, and I will spread the results of our work to universities, research institutes, and corporate research institutes as best practices.”
