The Republic of Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI; President Kang Jung-keuk) dubbed Mr. LEE Min-su, the senior engineer of the research vessel (RV) operation team of the KORDI South Sea Research Institute, as KORDI Person of The Month for March 2011.

Mr. LEE served as first mate and captain of the RV Onnuri and the RV Ieodo for years and helped establish systems and policies for research vessels. He is recognized as the latest KORDI Person of The Month for his important contributions.

           He studied navigation at Republic of Korea Maritime University and joined KORDI as first mate of the Onnuri, a KORDI research vessel, in October 1991. Later, he served as first mate of the RV Onnuri and the RV Ieodo and captain of the RV Onnuri. In doing so, he contributed meaningfully to safe navigation, research activities, and ocean exploration by the vessels. He is currently the head of the research vessel operation team of the KORDI South Sea Research Institute.

The RV Onnuri was Republic of Korea’s first fully-equipped research vessel. When it was taken over from Mjellem & Karlsen Verft AS, he boarded her as first mate and confirmed her overall functionality and seaworthiness, overcoming the then insufficient expertise of Republic of Korea in the field and thereby making a great contribution to the introduction of a top-rate research vessel.

Since 2009, he has headed up KORDI’s research vessel operations and successfully led the construction of a range of large and small vessels by improving treatment and working conditions of crew members and facilitating mutual communication, as a result improving and expanding Republic of Korea’s fleet of research vessels.
