The Republic of Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI; President KANG Jung-geuk) announced the results of the recent UCC Contest featuring the K-pop song “The Sea,” which was arranged to widely popularize the song.
The contest received UCCs from February 21 to April 1 this year. A total of 177 competitors from 45 teams sent their UCCs featuring the song, which had been produced last year to promote love for the sea, and underwent two rounds of evaluation: first by general Internet users, often dubbed netizens in Republic of Korea; second by a panel. Six teams were selected as winners.
The grand prize went to a team named “Vitamin SEA,” comprising two Seoul Women’s University students?Ms. KIM Min-a and Ms. LEE Cheong-mi?who had submitted a UCC entitled “My Friend, Sea.” They are going to receive a KORDI President’s Award and a cash prize of two million KRW. The UCC “My Friend, Sea” is an animated music video. It featured drawing on a sketchbook with crayons and neatly expressed the sense of familiarity that “The Sea” conveys, garnering a strong response from both netizens and the panel.
The second prize winners are Mr. SEO Yeong-ju (Dong-gu, Gwangju City) whose UCC depicted the lyrics of “The Sea” through watercolor drawing effects, and a team of elementary school students (Class 5-3, Busan Singok Elementary School), who submitted a UCC featuring photos of the sea they themselves had taken harmoniously with the song sung by about twenty students. Each second prize winner or winning team will receive a KORDI President’s Award and a cash prize of one million KRW.
Three teams were selected as third prize winners: Team 2P (KIM Cheol-jin and one other student of Daekyeong Information Industrial High School), Team DDL (KIM Gyeong-su and 13 other students of Chonnam National University), and Team Gopang (KIM Gwan-seong and two other students of Seoul National University).
All the UCCs submitted including the winners can be viewed at the KORDI blog at http://blog.kordi.re.kr.
KORDI unveiled the K-pop song “The Sea” in December last year to widely publicize the potential of the sea and help the public feel more affinity for the vast treasure house for humanity. Because it was created in cooperation by Mr. JEONG Pung-song, a famous composer, arranger, and lyricist of numerous Korean popular songs, and Ms. Insuni, one of the most renowned Korean singers, the song attracted much attention when it was released.
