The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, President Kim Woong-Seo) announced the hosting of the Pan Ocean Remote Sensing Conference (PORSEC) at the International Convention Center Jeju from November 4 (Sun) to 7 (Wed).

PORSEC is an international academic forum for sharing ocean-related earth science research using remote sensing technology. Since the inaugural conference in 1992, PORSEC has been held biennially, and this year, KIOST’s Ocean Satellite Center decided to host the conference in Jeju. About 200 experts in remote sensing from Korea, United States, China, Japan, Germany and other countries attended this conference, where the results of about 150 studies were presented.

This conference featured plenary speakers Dr. Werner Alpers, a Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Hamburg, Germany, who is a satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR), Dr. Barnabas Bede, a professor at DigiPen Institute of Technology and an expert in machine learning, Dr. Cara Wilson, a satellite oceanographer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Dr. Yongseung Kim, a principal researcher at Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) specializing in satellite remote sensing, as well as various scholars who will be presenting on their research on the use of satellites for oceanography and atmospheric science,  satellite oceanography, and the development of satellite data processing technology. Detailed information about PORSEC can be found on its website (http://porsec2018.kosc.kr/).

KIOST President Kim Woong-Seo remarked, “KIOST’s Ocean Satellite Center has been successfully operating the first geostationary ocean color imager (GOCI) with active support from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. As we look forward to launching the second GOCI, this conference provides a great opportunity for us to inform the world of our own research achievements and also for strengthening cooperation between groups of experts, which would be helpful for the development of Korea’s ocean satellites.”
