'Future directions of marine science and technology 
for the realization of a creative economy'

KIOST organizes a seminar on April 3

The Republic of Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST) holds a seminar to map out the blueprint for the future of the marine science and technology in Republic of Korea on the occasion of the inauguration of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

The seminar will take place at the President Hotel in Seoul on April 3 at 2 p.m. under the theme "Visions and Roles of the KIOST in Realizing a Creative Economy."

Many prominent figures in the field of marine science and technology will attend, including Park Han-il, KIOST’s chairman, Choi Hang-sun, professor emeritus of Seoul National University, and Jeon Jun-su, vice president of Sogang University.

The first session will be devoted to discussion on "Cooperation among Marine-Related Agencies," and the second session on "Visions and Roles."

During the first session, officials from marine-related agencies will discuss future cooperation in the field of marine science and technology for the realization of a creative economy. Participants include Kim Dae-cheol, president of Hydrographic Society of Republic of Korea ; Lee Gwang-nam, director of the Fisheries Policy Institute, Republic of Korea Fisheries Association; Lee Jae-wan, president of the Marine Industry Association of Republic of Korea ; Jeong Hyeon-jin, director of the Office of Marine Information, Navy Headquarters; Jo Yong-gap, director of the Office of Policy & Planning, Republic of Korea Institute of Marine Science and Technology Promotion; and Chae Hong-gi, director of the KCG Research Institute, Republic of Korea Coast Guard.

During the second session, experts from various sectors will discuss the visions and roles that the marine science and technology sector should pursue to realize a creative economy. Participants will include Gwak Jae-won, president of the Republic of Korea Marine Journalists Network; No Yeong-jae, president of the Korean Society of Oceanography; O Cheol-ho, a professor from Soongsil University; Lee Jang-jae, senior researcher at the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies; Jang Gyeong-il, a professor from Seoul National University; Jo Sang-rae, president of the Society of Naval Architects of Republic of Korea ; and Heo Yun-su, senior researcher at the Busan Development Institute.

KIOST President Kang Jung-keuk said that the year 2013, when the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries was revived and KIOST marks its 40th anniversary, will be a turning point in the history of Republic of Korea's marine science. "I hope that the seminar will contribute to finding ways for the local marine science and technology sector to continuously contribute to the realization of a creative economy, which is the vision of the new government, and also contribute to mapping out practical strategies for KIOST to pursue,” he noted.
