The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, Kim Woong-seo, President) announced that on July 19, a ceremony to celebrate the publication of “Guidelines for Public/Private Enterprises to Invest in Peru’s Aquaculture Industry” was held at Delfines Hotel & Convention Center in Lima, Peru.

The event, co-hosted by KIOST’s Korea-Peru Research Laboratory on Marine Science & Technology For Latin America (KOPE-LAR) and the Peruvian Ministry of Production, was attended by Cho June-hyuck, Korean ambassador to Peru, Rocio Barrios, Peru’s Minister of Production, Congressman Marvin Palma, also the Deputy Minister of Production, and over 90 representatives from the Peruvian Marine Research Institute, the National Fisheries Health Service (SANIPES), and associations of fisheries and aquaculture and related businesses.
KOPE-LAR was launched in Lima, Peru in 2012 to promote cooperation in ocean science and technology between the Korean and Peruvian governments. It is the base for Korea’s ocean cooperation in Latin America, run by KIOST and Instituto del Mar del Peru.

KOPE-LAR published the guidelines to provide assistance to domestic and foreign enterprises interested in Peru’s aquaculture industry, and was approved by the fifth KOPE-LAR steering committee in 2018. The Korean edition of the Guidelines was released in February 2019 and the English edition in July 2019. The publication covers the status of Peru’s aquaculture industry, its related laws, regulations and incorporation procedures, and considerations for getting involved in the industry, as seen through examples of success and failure.

Ambassador Cho June-hyuck said that the Guidelines are significant as they help private companies wishing to enter Peru’s aquaculture sector and expressed his sincere wishes that various forms of cooperation through KOPE-LAR will take place going forward. Minister Rocio Barrios stressed the importance of the aquaculture industry in the Peruvian economy and expects the Guidelines to invigorate foreign investment in it.

President Kim Woong-seo of KIOST said, “KIOST will provide support to KOPE-LAR to facilitate cooperation between the private sector, government and research institutes in both Korea and Latin America.”
