Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) President Kim Woong-seo has announced that starting November 12th, KIOST will hold a special 3-day exhibition at Dong-A Ilbo Plaza in Gwanghwamun to commemorate Emperor Gojong’s Imperial Edict for Dokdo. On October 25, 1900, Emperor Gojong enacted Imperial Edict No. 41, proclaiming Korea's territorial sovereignty over Dokdo.

The special exhibition will display KIOST’s research results, which have contributed to the consolidation of Korea’s sovereignty over the island and its use and management. The research results include research on marine biodiversity using Dokdo’s living organisms and its underwater landscape; marine scientific research vessels for researching Dokdo and of marine scientist worksites; and seamounts surrounding Dokdo and Ulleungdo. Additionally, marine organisms including Donghae Neoclinus bryope, first discovered on Dokdo, and the seven-stripe tidepool gunnel will be introduced.

The Korean government has enacted an “Act on the Sustainable Use of Dokdo” to explore the potential value of the island and its systematic use and management. The KIOST Dokdo Research Center has been designated a national research institute specializing in Dokdo, and is building a system for research and data collection on the island and its surrounding waters, for use nationally.

Research Center Director Park Chan-hong stated, “In this exhibition, there will be many things to see, including various published works and a 4D experience zone where visitors can experience Dokdo virtually. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition.” The center will continue to emphasize the importance of Dokdo and the discovery of its potential value.

KIOST President Kim Woong-seo said, “Dokdo is a habitat for a variety of marine organisms and a place of great significance in marine science, revealing the entire process of the growth and evolution of seamounts.” He added, “This exhibition will serve as an opportunity for further discovery about Dokdo.”
